Kitchen sinks form an integral element of your daily routine, which you don’t really understand until you find your kitchen sink clogged. Spending time with a clogged kitchen sink and getting your hands dirty is the last thing that you would want to do at any given point of time. However, things do happen even if you don’t want them to happen and even if you take adequate precautions.
So here’s how you can fix a clogged kitchen sink and save your energy and time for things that make you happy or add value to your life:
Manual Solution to Clogged Kitchen Sink: Use a Plunger
- Partially fill the sink with hot water.
- Place the plunger over the drain. If you have a double sink, block the unclogged drain with a wash cloth to make sure that you direct the plunger’s pressure on the clogged sink only.
- Move the plunger up and down fast. Pull the plunger off the opening and check if the water has started moving down.
- Continue working the plunger up and down till your sink gets unclogged.
Mr. Wizard’s Solution to Clogged Kitchen Sink: Use Vinegar and Baking Soda Combo
- Put on a pair of rubber gloves. Yes, it’s a must or else you will get your hands dirty. Use a bowl to take out the stagnant water from the sink. Collect the water in a bucket.
- Take a cup of baking soda and try to push it down the clogged drain. You may use a spatula to push down the baking soda through the clog.
- Next, pour a cup of vinegar into the opening. Close the opening with the stopper so that the vinegar moves down.
- Allow the solution to react with the clog. Wait for 5 minutes. Pour a cup of warm water through the opening.
- If this does not seem to work, pour 4 cups of boiling water through the opening. If things are still worse, apply baking soda and vinegar solution again and repeat the process till you see results.
DIY Plumbing Solution for Clogged Kitchen Sink: Use a Cable Auger
- Open the kitchen cabinet below the sink. Put a bucket below the pipe to collect the water that may drain out.
- Detach the curved portion of the pipe, which is referred to as “trap”. Use your hand to unscrew PVC pipes and if you fail, you may use a pipe wrench to slacken the contacts.
- Drain the water of the trap into the bucket. Check for clogs in the pipe. Pour hot water through the sink opening to check for clogs in the pipe. If the sink is found to be still clogged, you will need to remove the horizontal pipe that lies between the wall and the trap. Push the auger through the hole in the wall till it meets a blocked end. Pull out 46 cm of cable from the stub pipe and then tighten the lock screw.
- Rotate the handle in a clockwise direction while pushing the auger deeper inside the hole. Dig in while rotating the handle in clockwise direction until the auger comes into contact with the clog. Withdraw the auger from the stub pipe and fix all parts.
- Let hot water run through the pipe. If the water moves slowly, use a plunger to push down the remnants of the clog.
