Why Flushing Your Water Heater Matters

From new construction and remodels to everyday plumbing repairs, our family-owned business is committed to keeping your home’s plumbing running smoothly — and that includes educating our customers on the best practices for plumbing maintenance.

One of the most overlooked but important services we recommend is an annual water heater flush.

Why You Should Flush Your Water Heater Annually

Most water heater manufacturers recommend flushing your water heater once a year. Why? Because over time, sediment builds up inside the tank or tankless system, leading to a range of issues including:

  • Reduced hot water output

  • Strange noises coming from the unit

  • Rusty or discolored water

  • Higher energy bills

  • Premature wear and tear

By flushing out this sediment, you can extend the lifespan of your water heater, improve energy efficiency, and avoid costly repairs down the road.

How the Process Works

Depending on whether you have a tank-style or tankless water heater, the flushing process looks a little different.

  • Tank-style water heaters: Our technicians drain the tank, refill it, and drain it again to help dislodge and remove sediment at the bottom.

  • Tankless water heaters: We connect a hose and pump, using a vinegar solution to flush the unit internally for at least 45 minutes. This helps reduce scale and mineral buildup, which is especially important in areas with hard water.

The entire process typically takes 1 to 2 hours, depending on the amount of buildup. During this time, our technicians also inspect for leaks and other potential issues. This is especially important in Savannah homes, where many water heaters are tucked away in attics — areas that homeowners rarely check. A small leak left unnoticed can turn into major water damage and expensive repairs.
