Importance of Annual Flush of Water Heaters

Jun 23, 2025

Let’s talk about the importance of the annual water heater flush.

Manufacturers suggest an annual flushing of your water heater. This is important for extending its lifespan, improving energy efficiency, and preventing potential problems with rust and sediment buildup.

Have you noticed signs of reduced hot water output, strange noises, rusty water, or increased energy bills? Then it is time for a water heater flush.

The process normally takes 1 to 2 hours depending on the amount of build up in your existing water heater.

In a tank-style water heater the process consists of draining the tank, re-filling the tank, and draining again hoping to flush out the sediment build up. In the tankless style unit a hose and pump is connected. We use a vinegar solution to continuously flush internally for at least 45 minutes, reducing the scaling within the unit.

During the flush time, our technicians will also check for leaks and other possible issues with the unit. In Savannah, many water heaters are located in the attic, where customers rarely visit. Potential leaks on water heaters can cause costly repairs that could be avoided if regularly checked.
