Savannah CEO recently featured Tonya Reed of Henry Plumbing discussing why regular water heater flushing is one of the most important maintenance steps homeowners can take to help protect their plumbing systems and extend the life of their equipment.
As licensed and insured plumbing contractors serving the Savannah area for more than 57 years, Henry Plumbing provides plumbing services for new construction, remodels, repairs, and ongoing maintenance for residential and commercial properties throughout Coastal Georgia.

During the Savannah CEO interview, Tonya Reed explained that most water heater manufacturers recommend annual flushing to help remove sediment buildup that naturally develops over time. Without routine maintenance, sediment can collect inside the system, potentially reducing efficiency, increasing energy costs, and shortening the lifespan of the unit.
Tonya noted that warning signs of water heater issues can include rising utility bills, inconsistent hot water, unusual noises, or decreased performance. Regular maintenance can help identify these issues before they turn into larger and more expensive repairs.
For traditional tank-style water heaters, the flushing process typically involves draining the tank, refilling it, and draining it again to help clear sediment and mineral buildup from the system. Tankless water heaters require a different process, often using a vinegar solution circulated continuously through the unit for at least 45 minutes to help reduce scaling and buildup inside the system.
The Savannah CEO feature also highlighted the importance of professional inspections during the flushing process. While performing maintenance, Henry Plumbing technicians can check for leaks, wear, or other developing plumbing concerns that homeowners may not notice on their own.
In Savannah-area homes, water heaters are frequently located in attics, making preventative maintenance even more important. If a leak or tank failure occurs overhead, it can potentially lead to significant water damage and costly repairs throughout the home.
By staying proactive with annual water heater maintenance, homeowners can often improve energy efficiency, extend the life of their systems, and reduce the risk of unexpected plumbing emergencies.
